Dr. Jeff Buchanan-Dorrance
Jeff Buchanan-Dorrance was born and raised in Halifax and earned an Honours BSc in Biology from The University of Western Ontario. He was commissioned first as an infantry officer, serving as a platoon commander in The Royal Canadian Regiment, then cross-trained in Logistics. He studied towards his Certified Management Accountant (CMA) and parlayed his lifelong love of solving problems into a career as a finance systems consultant, based in Toronto.
Looking to apply his talents in the field of health care, Jeff attended Michigan College of Optometry (MCO) at Ferris State University. He graduated in 1996 with both a BS in Vision Science and a Doctor of Optometry (OD). Throughout his studies, he maintained an academic average over 98.5% and was the first Doctorate recipient in the history of MCO to graduate with a GPA of 4.0. He was the recipient of the Beta Sigma Kappa Silver Medal and a number of other awards and scholarships in academics and administrative science. At MCO, he also applied his talents to developing modular forms systems for clinic and practice use and assisted in lecturing in Business Management. He was the top candidate in the 1996 cycle of the US National Board Examinations (NBEO).
Dr. Buchanan-Dorrance returned to his roots in Halifax in 1996 after externships with: The Wellness Plan (HMO) in inner-city Detroit, Michigan; 96th Medical, US Air Force, Eglin AFB, Florida; and Fort Wayne Veterans Administration Medical Centre (VAMC), Fort Wayne, Indiana. He spent 15 years in practice at the Halifax Shopping Centre before founding West Halifax Optometry (WHO) in 2011. He has been on the NSAO Council and has chaired or sat on a number of NSAO committees. He is a member of both the Canadian Association of Optometrists (CAO) and NSAO, and is currently sitting as an assessor for the Practice Enhancement Committee (PEC) of the College of Optometrists (NSCO).
He is raising 3 boys with his partner, Lynne, on the South Shore. Dr. Buchanan-Dorrance has a very wide range of interests, including ballistic strength training, odd lifts, barefoot running, portraiture, art collecting, food & wine, baking, fine Swiss mechanical watches, British automobiles, competitive axe-throwing, back-country hiking, canoeing, and kayaking. He is also an Agatsu-certified kettlebell instructor. He contributes to a number of local community and charitable organizations.
Were it not for work, Jeff would be barefoot all the time.
