Eye Health Care
Your eyes: A gateway to complete health.
When you think of an optometrist you may recall lots of eyeglasses, tiny flashlights, and long stares through strange-looking devices deep into your eyes – but that’s only part of the picture. As optometrists we specialize in eye care, but as health care professionals we’re driven by a desire to safeguard your complete health. When we perform an eye exam we do it as eye doctors, as health care professionals, and as people who genuinely care about protecting your long-term wellbeing.
Optometrists are offered a unique insight into the workings of the human body. The eyes are the only place where doctors are able to observe your veins, arteries, nerves and brain tissue at work and undisturbed by invasive measures. While looking at the many factors that can potentially impact your vision, we also watch for indications of broader health concerns by investigating the condition of the different tissues we are able to observe.
Optometrists are on the watch for:
Retinal artery occlusions and atherosclerosis - the thinning of retinal vessels often caused by high blood pressure, diabetes, or high cholesterol, which indicate the potential for a heart attack or stroke.
Thyroid eye disease – a condition of the soft tissues surrounding the eyes which can indicate an overactive thyroid or potential auto-immune deficiencies.
Microaneurysms and haemorrhages – the bulging or leaking of the tiny vessels in the eye that can indicate the presence of diabetes and the onset of a number of diabetes-related ocular conditions.
Irregular optical pressure – a change in ocular pressure which can indicate the growth of a tumour and which may go unnoticed by other exams until further developed.
As devoted professionals and caring people, the doctors at West Halifax Optometry carefully observe the eyes for any abnormalities in order to give early warning for any potential health concerns. Optometry is about more than just the eyes – it’s a crucial factor in assessing and protecting your complete health.
